Labrador Breed Characteristics
Originally from Canada, Labradors are a popular breed here in Australia, known for their abilities in the water and their keen instinct to retrieve. Thus referred to as Labrador Retrievers, these loving and loyal companions make able gun dogs, whose purpose is to find and retrieve fowl.
Labradors are medium-large dogs, with females weighing up to 32 kg and
males up to 41 kg. In terms of height, females should measure between 55
and 60 cm at the withers, which is the ridge between the shoulder
blades, and males between 57 and 62 cm tall.
Their coat is short, straight, and dense with a soft undercoat. It is
fairly water-repellent so that Labs can swim almost any time of year.
They do shed their coat, some more than others; a weekly brushing should
keep most Labradors well-groomed.
Labs come in three, mainly solid, colours: black, yellow with shades
ranging from light cream to fox red, and chocolate which is medium to
dark brown. Their eye colour can be brown or hazel. A distinctive
physical characteristic of this breed is webbed paws, which facilitate
their swimming, and also protects their paws from snow.
Labradors are friendly, playful, affectionate, even-tempered, and very
trainable. They are great with children and other animals, thus making
excellent family dogs. If you are interested in purchasing a Labrador
puppy for your family, visit Dogs.
Labs enjoy carrying things in their mouths, and they can do so gently.
They possess a fairly high level of energy, and need daily activity to
keep their bodies and minds challenged. Exercising them daily with
retrieving games, and swimming if possible, will keep Labs happy and out
of trouble.
